peekaboo beans
third year | work practicum | childrenswear
During my third year at KPU’s Wilson School of Design, I interviewed for three different work practicums and was placed at Peekaboo Beans, a children’s fashion company based in Richmond, BC. I worked there from January to April 2016 with two main supervisors (one in design and one in marketing), though I made myself available to anyone in the office who needed assistance.
Peekaboo Beans was an ideal work practicum placement for me, due to my interest in childrenswear design and my focus on design and marketing. I learned a lot about the integration of company culture, the importance of decision-making and teamwork, and the expectations of a professional workplace environment.
Though I do not have rights to the work I created during my time at Peekaboo Beans, part of my practicum requirements included the creation of a shareable file, detailing my experiences. The intention is to pass it on to future fashion design students to help them decide whether Peekaboo Beans is a good fit for them.
In the document, I listed the following tasks:
DESIGN
Participating in weekly design meetings
Assisting in fittings and line presentations
Creating color cards, prints, graphics specifications, line sheets, and moodboards
Managing forecasting, design references, and color story Pinterest boards
Organizing, measuring, and packing/unpacking samples
MARKETING
Participating in weekly marketing meetings
Prepping and assisting with in-house photoshoots
Creating graphics and marketing materials for social media, website, and print
Editing product and lifestyle photos for print and web
Creating business cards, name tags, and posters
OTHER
Participating in weekly team huddles
Researching direct sales companies
Picking, checking, packing, and filing customer orders
Purchasing supplies for photoshoots and other marketing materials
Creating inventory sheets and other miscellaneous documentation
